As a Gospel movement, we Navigators are continuously marked with an emerging workforce of laborers who lead the ministry efforts in different contexts and capacities to see the lost coming to saving faith in Christ, disciples made for Him, and laborers raised and multiplied to carry the task of the Great Commission into completion. We are convinced of God’s call as a movement to make a unique contribution in the Body of Christ, through the raising of workers for God’s kingdom next door to everywhere. The question is, “What kind of leadership is required in making such a crucial contribution successfully?
Throughout the council of Scripture, the LORD commands us to resist fear (Gen 151ff, Isa 4110, Jer17-9, Mk 440, Mat 1028), and find strength and courage in Him. This command is meant to be an encouragement to His people (Acts 189-10,2311, Jos 17-8, Deut 321-22, 2Chron2017) in difficult circumstances that can trigger discouragement, fear and disbelief. It comes with a call to unwavering obedience to God’s instructions, and an assurance of His abiding presence with His people in carrying on His given task (Num 148-9). While this command has nothing to do with the leader/people finding strength and courage on their own wisdom, experiences, or even their special abilities, but in God alone, unfortunately, more often than not it’s followed with disbelief, fear and disobedience.
The incidences in the Book of Numbers 13 & 14 gives us both a good and bad example to work with. 12 chief leaders of the nation of Israel were sent out to spy the land God had promised to give His people. Only 2 out of the 12 walked and led from the strength and courage that comes from the Lord (Num1330ff, 146-10). The rest removed their gaze from the LORD (Num1327-29,31-33) and His promises (Num 132, Ex 64, Gen 1518ff), then fell into disbelief and disobedience (141-4) leading to disastrous consequences (vs.11-12, 20ff). 45yrs later, Caleb was still walking and leading in the strength of the LORD (Jos 146-14), remaining steadfast in God’s promise to be with him (v.12), and passionately advancing God’s Kingdom to his old age (85yrs). As we seek to grow strong in the Lord, leading in His strength and grace, (Eph 610, 2Tim21), let’s always remember; (1). We experience God’s providence of strength and courage in the pursuit of an obedient life to His Word (Jos 17-8) (2). By consistently abiding in and remembering His promise to always be with us as we pursue the mission (Matt 2819-20, Isa 4110) (3). Through the empowering work of God’s Spirit who enables us to live courageously and keeping strong in the mission (2Tim17)
